10 Things You Didn’t Know …. about the number 10

1. In China, today is celebrated as “Double 10 Day”. It celebrates the start of the Wuchang Uprising on October 10th 1911 which led to the formation of the Republic of China.

2. The regulations for basketball specify that the hoop should be 10 feet above the ground.

3. According to a survey earlier this year 10% of women like to paint their nails in bed.

4. It’s said that tenpin bowling began when ninepin bowling was banned in Connecticut in 1841 so an extra pin was added to get round the law.

5. Ten years of marriage is a tin anniversary.

6. The Pythagoreans in Ancient Greece saw 10 as the holiest number of all, being the sum of one (existence), two (creation), three (life) and four (the elements of earth, air, fire and water).

7. That, according to the Pythagoreans, was why we are decadactylous (have 1o fingers).

8. West Side Story (1961) is the only film to have won exactly 10 regular Oscars, though Gone With The Wind (1939) won eight, plus one honorary and one technical.

9. There are 10 square furlongs in an acre.

10. Ten is the average hours of sunshine in London on an October day.

    Hmm, painting nails in bed. Would probably be a disaster for me.

    We have 10 fingers, but use only nine to type on the keyboard. Lately I have trained myself to use my left thumb for the space bar. Feels weird.
