When I began my training with All Saints three years ago I was introduced different ways of engaging with prayer and liturgy. I had already begun to say Morning Prayer myself, but it was only in the company of others that I truly began to get involved with it and to appreciate it properly.
One of the things that I loved from very first time I heard it was the prayer during Compline (Night Prayer) that begins with the line “Before the ending of the day”. The melody is simple, and is very easy to grasp, and even now when I say Compline on my own, I can’t help but “sing” this prayer to myself as I read it.
I thought today that you may like to hear it too, to close your day in the presence of the Lord and to ask his blessing on your rest tonight. This version is sung by Truro Cathedral Choir, and though it is slower than I am used to, I think it is beautiful and so evocative of times gone by when life seemed to be so much more simple. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That you, with steadfast love, would keep
Your watch around us while we sleep.
From evil dreams defend our sight,
From fears and terrors of the night;
Tread underfoot our deadly foe
That we no sinful thought may know.
O Father, that we ask be done
Through Jesus Christ, your only Son;
And Holy Spirit, by whose breath
Our souls are raised to life from death. Amen
Love and light
